Assistance with Brushing

Assistance with brushing can make a big difference for anyone who finds it difficult to clean their teeth independently. A carer, family member or support person can help by using a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, gently brushing all tooth surfaces and along the gumline twice a day. Take your time, use small controlled movements and make sure the person is comfortable throughout. If they wear dentures, these should also be cleaned daily. Regular support with brushing helps reduce plaque, bleeding gums and the risk of tooth decay, while keeping the mouth feeling clean and comfortable.

Cleaning Dentures

Start by using a denture brush to clean all surfaces of the denture carefully, including around any grooves, clasps and the fitting surface. Clean dentures over a bowl of water or a folded towel so they are less likely to break if dropped. Use cool or lukewarm water with a suitable denture cleaner, rinse thoroughly afterwards, and avoid very hot water as this can distort the denture.
